Lauris nobilis

The bay tree, or Laurus nobilis, is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to the Mediterranean region. It is most famous for its aromatic, dark green leaves, which are used as a popular culinary herb, commonly known as bay leaves. These leaves are typically used whole or dried to flavor soups, stews, and other savory dishes. The bay tree can grow up to 30 feet tall in its natural habitat, though it is often pruned to a smaller size in gardens.

Bay trees thrive in well-drained, slightly alkaline soil and prefer sunny locations. In addition to its culinary uses, the bay tree has cultural significance, symbolizing honor and victory in ancient Greece and Rome, where laurel wreaths were awarded to champions. The bay tree is also appreciated for its attractive, glossy foliage and small, yellow-green flowers that bloom in spring, followed by dark purple berries.
